“Diligence, Perseverance, Frugality and Trustworthiness” is the motto of Chang Gung University, which encourages the students and faculty to maintain a simple and hardworking lifestyle, always in pursuit of excellence and never satisfied with the second best. To achieve this goal, Chang Gung University developed close collaborations with industry for both research and training. Discussing the specialty of the university, Chao Sung Lai, Professor and Dean of College of Engineering Department of Electronics Engineering says, “To provide our student with global perspective, we engage collaborations with several world leading college in USA, Europe, Asia and Australia”. He also stated that, “we have research oriented engineering modules while emphasizing collaboration with local industry”.

The University currently consists of the College of Medicine, College of Engineering, and College of Management. The institute is striving for excellence in both instruction and research area since its establishment. The developmental goal of the university is to turn from a teaching oriented to research oriented university.

In taking advantage of Formosa Plastics Group’s abundant manufacturing and medical service resources, Chang Gung University aims to be a first-rate internationally renowned university that prepares high standard professional talents in the fields of medical science, high technology, and knowledge management.

The university’s emphasis remain on research and training in the fields of medicine, engineering and management.

Professor and Head of Graduate institute of Biochemical and Biomedical Engineering, Min-Hsien Wu demonstrated the wearable device for infants. Since the infants can hardly articulate pain and un-comfort at home, continuous monitoring of their vital signs and physiological parameters is crucial for parents to know their exact health conditions.

“Critically ill infants need sustained monitoring in case of various dangerous conditions. In addition, the apparent life-threatening events of 1- to 4-year-old infants, such as drowning in the bathrooms or head injuries occurring from falls or shaking, motivate clinicians and parents to search for an inexpensive and non-invasive way to effectively monitor the health status of infants and send alarm information Whenever the infant’s health condition is bad or whether the infant comes into contact with any other threatens from outside word,” said professor Wu.

“The initial purpose of the application of wearable sensor systems in infants health monitoring is to provide them every day – centered care to ensure that the appropriate care or therapy can be given to the onset of complications. The traditional method requires dedicated manpower and sometimes it is difficult for clinicians and parents to identify the infants’ potential physiological condition” said Wu.

Health monitoring system is therefore a tool that provides early indication of changing patient status, and allows for early intervention, but is also a means by which the effect of interventions and therapies may be recorded, evaluated and controlled.
